An Etowah County jury recommends that Joyce Garrard spend life in prison without parole for running her granddaughter to death in 2012. Last week, the jury convicted Garrard of Capital Murder for the death of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin. Prosecutors say the girl collapsed and later died after Garrard forced her to run for hours without stopping. Closing arguments in the sentencing phase wrapped up today and just hours later, the jury returned with the recommended punishment. The decision came on Garrard's 50th birthday. Judge Billy Ogletree has the final decision on Garrard's fate. Her sentencing hearing is set for May.
