Pitman Renovations: Gadsden
For the past several weeks, visitors to Downtown Gadsden have been seeing a plywood construction barrier around the front of the historic Pitman Theater. Now, the plywood is gone and the old theater has a beautiful new entrance. Workers spent the past few weeks installing new doors and glass along the front of the building while at the same time removing, cleaning and reattaching the green granite façade. Officials say that the old glass doors were very heavy and were not functioning properly; which was causing a hazard for people entering the venue. Problems with the granite were discovered while the glasswork was being done. Now that the exterior work is done, workers are turning attention to the interior. The funding for the continuing upgrades on the theater is coming from a combination of city funds and donated funds. The historic Pitman Theater has been serving Gadsden since 1947 and currently operates as a multi-use, special event facility. The Pitman will continue to be open for rentals and events even while renovations are underway.
