According to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Cheaha State Park may be on the list of 15 Alabama state parks that may close because of the proposed fiscal budget the Legislature is considering for 2016.
The budget now being considered in the Legislature takes $11.4 million from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources; $10.4 million of that will come from the State Parks agency. State Parks Director Greg Lein, says State Parks receive their revenue from user fees. If the budget passes the park system would have to close parks to compensate. Lein says he believes the decisions the State Parks system is making now will put parks in a better financial decision for the new fiscal year on October 1. He says he can’t project when they’ll close other parks. But, for now, the parks are open.
