Officer Attacked in Correctional Facility
The Alabama Department of Corrections says a correctional officer was injured today at the St. Clair Correctional Facility when an inmate attacked him during breakfast. The 4am incident set off another incident in which more than two dozen inmates assaulted officers using broken broom handles, locks tied to belts and other objects as weapons. Department of Corrections Spokesperson Bob Horton says that the prison was placed on lock-down, but some inmates refused to return to their cells. The department says that a response team used *reasonable force* to disarm the inmates. The injured officer – and three inmates – were taken to an off-site medical facility for treatment of injuries. A dozen inmates were treated by the prison medical staff. Prison officials are also investigating a stabbing at the same facility that sent an inmate to the hospital Wednesday night.
