Local Cemetery Receives Recognition


A local Weaver family representing the founders of the city of Weaver is presented a certificate from the Alabama Historic Cemetery Registry for their effort in bringing awareness and recognition to the final resting place of the forefathers of their city. June Bentley, members of the Weaver Family and County officials gathered in the Weaver Family Cemetery today to receive the listing of the cemetery as a historic cemetery in Alabama. Also, the cemetery is the final resting place of at least five Confederate soldiers including S-D McClellan, commander of Company F in the Alabama Infantry. Alexandria Historical Preservation Society President Mac Gillam says there is a tremendous amount of history in his community. The Cemetery was donated to the Alexandria Historical Group by Mrs. Owens about two years ago. Mrs. Owens has since passed away. The cemetery is located on Alexandria-Jacksonville Highway near the 2-way stop of Cedar Springs Road and Alexandria - Jacksonville Highway.
