JSU Women Finish Second In OVC Golf Championship


Eastern Kentucky shot the low round of the tournament with a 296 and held off a late Gamecock to claim a 1-shot win over Jacksonville State to win the Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday.

Jacksonville State shot their third-straight round of 301 to post a 54-hole total of 903, just behind EKU's total of 902, played on the par-72, 6,050-yard Hampton Cove on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. It marks the ninth time out of 12 years the Gamecocks have finished first or second in the OVC Championship.

Tennessee Tech finished third with a 914, followed by Belmont (918), Morehead State (920), Murray State (924), Austin Peay (942), SIU Edwardsville (969), Eastern Illinois (980) and Tennessee State finished with a 1041.

EKU's Sofie Levin shot a 4-under par 68 to finish with a 217 to win medalist honors and help the Colonels overcome a 4-shot deficit entering the final round.

Junior Melania Bajo Geijo shot a 74 on Wednesday to lead the Gamecocks with a three-day total of 225 to tie for fifth place to earn OVC All-Tournament honors.

Senior Maya Parsons shot the low round of the game for the Gamecocks, posting a 1-under par 71 to finish with a 229 to tie for ninth place. Freshman Natalia Azcue also tied for ninth after finishing with a 54-hole total of 229.

Junior Erin Gunnels tied for 14th place after finishing with a 231, while sophomore Angie Varona carded a 237 to finish 24th in the field of 50 players.

The second-place finish by the Gamecocks this week marks the highest finish this season and the 54-hole total of 903 marks the best score this season for Jacksonville State, beating the previous low-round 927 at Kiawah Island on March 1-3.
