Faith Christian Boys Soccer Punches Ticket To Championship Match


Faith Christian 3, Madison Academy 2, 2 OT (4-3 in shootout)

Faith Christian of Anniston (13-2) jumped out to a 2-1 first-half lead Thursday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex before Madison Academy clawed back to tie the match and send the AHSAA Class 1A-3A boys’ semifinal into overtime.

After two extra periods, the Lions finally won the match edging the Mustangs 4-3 in the shootout to advance to Friday night’s 8:30 p.m. finals.

Coach Erik McDaniel’s squad will face Westminster of Oak Mountain in the championship match. Westminster beat Bayside Academy 4-0.

Tyler Johnson scored both Faith goals in regulation scoring at 11:15 and 35:19 of the first half. Nathan Geis put Madison Academy (17-2-0) on the scoreboard with a goal at 15:28. His kick was set up by Ryan Pollard’s assist. Andrew Cash tied the match with 5:15 remaining in the second half on a free kick from the right sideline 45 yards away. It bounced in front of the goal and over the shoulder of the Lions’ goalkeeper to score.

In the shootout Faith nailed four of its five tries while Madison Academy connected on three.

Faith Christian goalkeeper Caleb McCord had four saves. Madison Acadamy goalkeeper Noah Harrison had one. Both teams were almost even on shots attempted with Johnson taking five of the Lions’ 14. The Mustangs took 13 shots.
