Nominees Confirmed for Charter School's Commission
Governor Robert Bentley and the Alabama State Board of Education have confirmed nominees for the new charter school commission. Bentley attended the board meeting today after it became clear the board couldn't make a quorum without him. Earlier this year, Bentley and the Alabama Legislature approved a plan to allow charter schools. Nominees were submitted by the governor, lieutenant governor, the House speaker and the Senate president pro tem. Several board members who had contested the confirmation process were absent for the vote. State Superintendent Tommy Bice said the absent members skipped the meeting because of funerals or illnesses. The commission's confirmation prompted Representative Terri Collins to withdraw a bill that would remove the board from the confirmation process.
