Blue Bell Creameries Reaches Agreement
Blue Bell Creameries confirms that it has entered into a voluntary agreement with the Alabama Department of Public Health. The arrangement requires the company to notify the state when there is a positive test result for listeria in its products or ingredients. The Alabama agreement is similar to those the company reached last month with regulatory agencies in Texas and Oklahoma. The agreements follow the Texas-based company's failure to tell federal or state health officials of repeated findings of listeria at its Oklahoma plant beginning back in 2013. A recent listeria outbreak forced the company to cut about a third of its workforce. 43 layoffs were announced at the Blue Bell Plant in Sylacauga along with 180 furloughs.
