A courtroom can be a scary place for adults, so you can just imagine how much it could frighten a young child. In an effort to make Calhoun County’s courtrooms a friendlier place for children, local judges have brought in a “comfort dog” for the children to pet. Circuit Judge Brian Howell says the dog’s name is Gabriel – “Gabe” for short – and he has been specially trained for this important job. Gabe was trained by the I-Canine program that used to be housed at McClellan and is now at Auburn University. Howell says Gabe is becoming a very popular part of the local court system. Gabe is also spending a lot of time down in Calhoun County Family Court, where District Judge Laura Phillips says he is fitting in just like part of the family.
