The Etowah County Council on Aging hosts its Elder Abuse Summit. More than 200 people attended the summit and learned how to detect elder abuse and the protocol to report it. Executive Director Jenifer Grace says the numbers are increasing and that sometimes people know something is wrong with someone’s elder care but don’t know what steps to take to help. In 2013 the local numbers of reported elder abuse topped out at 307. Grace says that just this year, the current number is 190 reported cases. Local attorney Brenda Stedham was the invited speaker at today’s summit. She spoke on educating the community. She says that is the key. Grace says that for every one person that reports a case of elder abuse, 23 cases go unreported. She adds to report a case you should call your local Sheriff’s Office and then your local Council on Aging.
