This past weekend, the Justice & Civil Rights Initiative was involved in a mock inmate project through the approval of Anniston Police Chief Shane Denham and Anniston City Manager Brian Johnson. This project allowed Justice and Civil Rights Initiative President and Founder Ed Moore III to be “booked” into the Anniston City Jail and placed under lockdown inside a cell for 24 hours. According to Moore, the purpose of this project was to have him experience incarceration firsthand, increase his awareness of the criminal justice system, become familiar with the living conditions of an inmate and increase his understanding of one's state of mind before, during and after incarceration. He says all of these objectives were met. Moore is in the process of briefing his staff on his experience inside the Anniston City Jail. He has already shared his experience with Calhoun Cleburne District Attorney Brian McVeigh. Moore will also have the opportunity to discuss his experience with law enforcement and other leaders from our area that he believes will build strong partnerships and provide avenues for building positive relationships with inmates and ex-inmates in our community.
