Man Charged for Assaulting Talladega Mayor
A man accused of attacking an Alabama mayor outside a barber shop has been charged with assault. Vestavia Hills police said in a statement that 71-year-old Benny Green of Irondale is being held on $150,000 bond. According to Vestavia Hills Chief of Police Dan Rary, Talladega Mayor Larry Barton was assaulted Saturday morning as he was getting out of his car outside of Cahaba Heights Plaza Barber Shop. Lieutenant Brian Gilham says Green repeatedly hit Barton in the head with a baseball bat. Green attempted to leave the scene on a bicycle, but witnesses managed to catch him and hold him until police arrived. Green was arrested at the scene and transported to Brookwood Hospital for a medical evaluation. Authorities say Barton was transported to UAB Hospital for medical treatment, but he’s expected to be okay.
