The Internal Revenue Service says the cyber theft of American taxpayer information earlier this year is much worse than originally thought. The IRS says criminals actually stole data from twice as many people. In May the government agency said thieves used a tool on the IRS web site to steal the tax forms of 104,000 people. After an extensive review, it revised that number to 220,000. The IRS is sending letters to warn victims about potential identity theft, and offer free credit protection. Victims will also get an extra personal identification number to protect future tax filings.
