The Etowah County Commission considers two options from the security commission on recommendations for a new security plan at the courthouse. The first option was an aggressive plan that included securing all courthouse entrances, installing alarms, security checkpoints, and a metal detector and x-ray machine. The option also involved budgeting for four part-time deputies. The second option was to leave the courthouse as it is, with the seven exterior doors remaining open, but add two part-time deputies to work no more than 29 hours. The commission was deadlocked but agreed to approve hiring two part-time deputies to work security in the building. The costs will come from funds designated for capital improvement projects. A full-time deputy already works at the courthouse. The part-time personnel would be in addition to the full-time deputy.
