New State Gun Laws
New gun laws taking effect in Alabama this week are aimed at making it more difficult for the mentally ill to buy firearms. The new laws require state probate court judges to report to law enforcement every person they commit for involuntary mental health treatment. Federal laws prohibit anyone involuntarily committed for treatment from buying a gun. People who are forced to receive treatment for mental illness can appeal to have their gun ownership right reinstated. The new laws also require state judges to report anyone found not guilty of a crime due to mental illness or mental defect. The new laws bring Alabama’s gun laws in line with federal gun laws.
