Agriculture Department Budget Cuts
State budget cuts would severely impact Alabama’s $70 billion plus Ag and Agribusiness Economy. That's according to Commissioner John McMillan. He says cutting the General Fund appropriation will have devastating consequences on the essential services they provide farmers and agribusinesses that contribute to the state’s economy. McMillan adds the department’s laboratories are among essential services that budget cuts would jeopardize. McMillan says the proposed budget would reduce the department’s General Fund Appropriation from $9.6 million to $5.3 million, a reduction of nearly 50%.
