National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month and this year’s theme is: “Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.” The Gadsden Etowah County Emergency Management Agency is asking people to take action now to stay safe and learn how to communicate during disasters that affect their community. This month includes the weekly themes of flood, wildfire, hurricane, and power outage. Heflin says in dealing with the series of possible threats, the preparedness steps to take are the same. And they include knowing your risk for where you live, having an individual and family preparedness plan in place, practicing that plan, and putting together an emergency kit. Heflin says the third active month for tornadoes in our region is November, and with that month quickly approaching he encourages people to pay special attention during America’s PrepareAthon and the national day of Action – National PrepareAthon Day on September 30, which culminates National Preparedness Month.
