Police Officer Takes Stand in Appeal Hearing

The Anniston police officer fired over his alleged membership in a seccesionist group takes the stand again as he appeals his firing. The Anniston civil service board is hearing Josh Doggrell’s appeal. His firing took place in June over his membership in the League of the South. According to reports, earlier this week Doggrell testified that he did not say in a 2013 speech that the department supported his membership. Doggrell was identified as a member of the league in a post by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog. Officials say, another officer, Lieutenant Wayne Brown, also identified in the blog, decided to retire to avoid "adverse publicity" and "creating a distraction" for the police department. Reports also say, Doggrell said that he was a dues-paying member of the League of the South until last year, when he stopped associating with it over positions it was taking that he felt were becoming more extreme.
