Anniston residents come together for a last opportunity at a public hearing to let the City Council know how they feel about cuts to education. Council members motioned at the last council meeting to add more money to the nonprofits, detention center and the Police Department by removing $100,000 from the Education Innovation Fund, used mainly to pay for pre-kindergarten classes in the city school system. According to officials, the proposed budget currently includes $500,000 for the fund, an increase of $150,000 from this year. Anniston’s budget is 36.4 million dollars and must be approved by October 1st.
