Lawmakers Propose Boat Tag to Help Parks

A few Alabama lawmakers are proposing a new boat tag that would generate revenue for state parks. Senator Gerald Dial of Lineville and Representative Margie Wilcox of Mobile announced a proposal to create a specialty boat tag. The tags could include the insignia of state universities or nonprofit groups, similar to those available for cars and trucks. Dial said the tags would cost about $50, and the revenue would be split between the entity on the tag and the state parks. The tags could generate about $2 million to $3 million a year for parks. If legislation is passed when lawmakers convene February for the 2016 session, the tags could be available in the spring. Officials have said this year the transfer of about $22 million from parks to the General Fund in recent years has eaten away at the division’s reserves and put the parks in jeopardy.
