Lawsuit Filed Against Local Apartment Complexes

Multifamily housing complexes are coming under fire after failures to design apartment complexes with features that accommodate the disabled. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit today in Birmingham's federal court stating that 36 multifamily properties in Alabama fail to comply with federal laws set in place by the Fair Housing Act which entitles individuals with disabilities to fair housing. The violations to the disabled include steps leading to building entrances, inaccessible parking, and insufficient space in bathrooms and kitchens. The suit includes violations against Jacksonville's Brookstone Village Apartments, and Hickory Run 1 and 2 complexes. Anyone with information about inaccessible conditions should call the Justice Department at 1-800-896-7743.
