New Trial Request Hearing for Garrard
An Etowah County Judge has scheduled a hearing for a woman convicted earlier this year in the death of her granddaughter. A judge will hear motions in Joyce Garrard's request for a new trial on October 16. In March of this year, a jury convicted Garrard of capital murder in the 2012 murder of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin. Prosecutors said Garrard forced the girl to run for hours as punishment for telling a lie about eating a candy bar. Hardin collapsed and she died a couple of days later at a hospital. Garrard's defense attorneys claim there were multiple errors during the trial and they're asking for a new trial.
