A Calhoun County jury has recommended the death penalty for a man convicted in the 2011 murder of a Wellborn Elementary School teacher. This week a Calhoun County jury convicted Jovon Gaston of capital murder in the death of Kevin Thompson. In April 2011, prosecutors say Gaston and two other men kidnapped Kevin Thompson from his Jacksonville apartment and drove him to several ATMs, forcing him to withdraw money at gunpoint. After that, prosecutors say the men stabbed Thompson and dumped his body in a secluded area off Highway 278 near Piedmont. Calhoun County Circuit Judge Bud Turner will hold a sentencing hearing for Gaston on November 12. The judge will decide whether to follow the jury's recommendation of death or to sentence him to life in prison.. In 2013- a jury convicted Nicholas Smith and sentenced him to die for his role in the murder. A third suspect- Tyrone Thompson - who is not related to the victim- has not stood trial yet.
