Renew Our Rivers Clean-up

A campaign that began with one Alabama Power employee who had a vision to improve the health and beauty of the Coosa River near Plant Gadsden where he worked continues with a clean-up in Oxford on Saturday. Renew Our Rivers gives Alabama Power employees and community volunteers the opportunity to make a remarkable impact in protecting waterways in their communities. The upcoming clean-up will begin with an 8:30AM sign-in at Oxford Civic Center’s Lakeside Pavilion. Volunteers will receive assignments and supplies that include trash grabbers and gloves. Georgia-Alabama Land Trust Program Director Christy Claes-Downs says volunteers will be cleaning up four or five sites. The day will conclude with a lunch at 11:00AM. With humble beginnings at the generating plants and lakes managed by Alabama Power, thousands of volunteers have spread the program up rivers and tributaries, creating more than 30 cleanups to remove trash across the state’s watersheds. In 2014, more than 319,000 pounds of trash was removed in Alabama.
