School Bus Safety Week
Some 25 million students nationwide begin and end their day with a trip on a school bus. Designed for safety, with flashing lights, giant mirrors, high seat backs and that bright yellow color, school buses keep more than 17 million cars away from school buildings every day. This is School Bus Safety Week. And, according to the National Safety Council, school buses are the safest way to get to and from school. They say, riding a bus to school is 13 times safer than riding in the family vehicle and 10 times safer than walking. Calhoun County Transportation Director Dr. Banyon Allison says their primary goal is a safe route to and from school. If bus service is available in your area, the National Safety Council recommends students take the bus rather than walk or ride with parents or teenagers. They add that more school-age pedestrians have been killed during the hour before and after school than any other time of day.
