Talledega Man Sentenced on Charges of Rape-1st and Attempted Rape-1st
53-year-old Anthony Lee Rainey formerly of Talledega, was sentenced today on charges of Rape in the First Degree and Attempted Rape in the First Degree. Rainey was convicted in August 2015 following a jury trial. Judge William Rhea ordered Rainey to serve a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and life imprisonment, respectively, in the cases. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively. Both of the charges against Rainey occurred in late 2013, when Rainey approached young females who were walking alone and offered to give them a ride. When the females got into his vehicle, Rainey took them to a secluded, wooded area and forced or attempted to force them to engage in sexual intercourse. The second victim managed to get out of the car and was able to get away. Both young women immediately reported the incident and provided law enforcement with a description of the suspect, which led to a composite drawing. DNA evidence from the rape kit and from the scene of the second incident confirmed Rainey’s identity. Rainey had several previous convictions from Gwinette County, Georgia, including Rape, Aggravated Assault and Burglary. He had subsequent charges in Etowah County for failing to comply with the Community Notification Act.
