JSU Holds Nation's Top Spot In Both Polls

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

For the first time in school history, the Jacksonville State football team finds itself a consensus No. 1 in the national polls.

The Gamecocks (7-1, 5-0 Ohio Valley Conference) jumped into the top spot in the FCS Coaches Poll on Monday after holding the No. 1 ranking in the STATS FCS Poll for the previous seven weeks. JSU had never been ranked at the top of any national football poll before this season.

The Gamecocks trailed Coastal Carolina by just three votes in the Coaches Poll last week, but a Coastal Carolina loss at Charleston Southern and a convincing JSU win over No. 13 Eastern Kentucky propelled Jax State to the No. 1 spot this week. JSU received 23 of the 26 first-place votes, while No. 2 Illinois State grabbed the other three. JSU leads ISU by 22 total votes in the poll.

Chattanooga is third, just ahead of Eastern Washington in fourth. McNeese State and North Dakota State are tied for fifth. EKU fell to 19th, while JSU's opponent on Saturday, Eastern Illinois, received 32 votes and are the fourth team out of the Top 25.

In the STATS poll, selected by media that covers FCS football across the country, JSU grabbed the to spot for the eighth-straight week. The Gamecocks lead Illinois State by 128 total votes, but received 139 first-place votes to the Cardinals' 18. UTC is in third, just ahead of EWU, while Richmond holds the No. 5 spot in the STATS poll.

EKU is ranked 18th after its loss to JSU, while EIU is the third team out of the top 25 by total votes.
