Trends in Prescription Drug Use Among Adults
In a recent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association researchers say the use of prescription drugs and the prevalence of polypharmacy among US adults increased over the course of a decade. The respondents provided information on their use of prescription drugs in the previous 30 days. Among the 11 drug classes that saw a jump were antidepressants, analgesics, prescription proton-pump inhibitors, muscle relaxants, and antidiabetic drugs. The researchers compared results among more than 37,000 adults aged 20 years and older who responded to the seven National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999 to 2000 through 2011 to 2012.
