Obama Asks for Immigration Ruling Appeal
The Obama administration today asked the US Supreme Court to revive President Barack Obama's executive action to protect millions of illegal immigrants from deportation, saying Republican-led states had no legal basis to challenge it. The Justice Department asked the US Supreme Court to review and reverse a lower court ruling on President Obama’s immigration executive order. It would enable millions of undocumented immigrants to be eligible for work authorization and other benefits. The ruling by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ten days ago is a loss for the President – Who made immigration reform a key initiative for his second term.Alabama and 25 other states challenged the president’s authority to implement the programs last November. The Justice Department says the President’s executive actions on immigration are lawful and not subject to judicial review.
