Gadsden officials say they have been approved for a new grant to expand a popular trail system. Mayor's Assistant Shane Ellison told the city council this week that the city had been approved for a 100,000 dollar grant that will allow the city to expand the Black Creek Trail System at Noccalula Falls. The grant was announced in a facebook post by Representative Mack Butler; and the city is still awaiting the official announcement by the Governor's office. The Black Creek Trail System is currently made up of about six miles of multi-use trails – some of which are paved with crushed stone and are handicapped accessible. Ellison says the grant will allow for the construction of additional miles of rugged trails for hiking and mountain biking. The grant money was awarded to the city through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Recreational Trails Program and will require a 25,000 dollar match by the city.
