An assisted living community in Calhoun County that has been providing an innovative lifestyle of alternative care for seniors since 1996 just wrapped up a year-long pedometer challenge. NHC Place Anniston implemented their pedometer challenge to raise awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity and promote healthy active living among its seniors. The seniors walked for more than 8-and-a-half million steps which totaled 5,000 miles. Recreation Coordinator Tim Shultz says it is as if you travelled from here to Germany and then back again. So, today they chose to celebrate their accomplishment with a Germany themed Christmas party. They began with 28 members in the walking club and partnered with Gentiva Health and Hospice. Shultz says walking is a physical activity to be enjoyed by people of all ages. Health professionals recommend walking at least 10,000 steps a day to achieve health benefits.
