The Etowah County woman convicted of her granddaughter’s death is on life support. According to a family attorney, Joyce Garrard suffered a heart attack in her prison cell in Wetumpka Sunday. She was taken to a hospital and placed on life support. Medical tests show Garrard has no brain activity. Last year, a jury convicted Garrard in the death of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin. In 2012, Prosecutors said Garrard forced the girl to run for hours. She collapsed and died a couple of days later in a hospital. A judge sentenced Garrard to life in prison without parole. The Alabama Department of Corrections says it has strict guidelines for removing prisoners from life support. They plan to run more medical tests for a couple of days before deciding whether to pull the plug.
