Bill to Prevent Wage Raises by Municipalities

A bill that would prohibit municipalities from raising the minimum wage or changing leave policies for private businesses cleared its first hurdle this morning. The bill would nullify any efforts by cities to increase the minimum wage. Representative David Faulkner of Mountain Brook is the bill’s sponsor. Faulkner says his bill doesn’t stop private industry or cities from raising wages for their own employees. Opponents of the bill argued that people can’t live on $7.25 an hour, the federal minimum wage used in Alabama. Others said that lawmakers shouldn’t take away elected city officials' ability to make a local decision. More than 50 GOP House members are co-sponsors on the bill.
