A bill that would reduce police jurisdictions cleared a House committee this week after being changed to apply to all cities and towns. A substitute bill approved in committee also gives municipalities two ways to keep their current 3 mile police jurisdictions, if they choose. Current law sets police jurisdictions at 3 miles beyond city limits, except where adjacent municipalities meet. The bills would change that to one-and-one-half miles by July 1st, 2017. The legislation does not allow for continued taxation of areas that would fall outside a new police jurisdiction. The bill will be before the full House soon, and then moved to the Senate.
