As treasure hunting tv shows have increased in popularity, so has the hobby of hunting for precious metals with a metal detector. The North Alabama Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America is tapped into that popularity and will be promoting the hobby this weekend with their Spring Coin Shoot on Saturday at the Alabama Gold Camp. A coin shoot is basically a metal detecting contest for both novice and long-time hobbyist. Beck adds that there will be a variety of prizes, in addition to special raffles and a hot dog lunch at the end of the contest. The event starts at 9am and will be held at the Alabama Gold Camp in Cragford, Alabama. The Gold Camp is the home of the North Alabama GPAA. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month to pan for gold along the banks of the creek that runs through the property.
