A group of Alabama lawmakers are announcing impeachment articles against Governor Robert Bentley. The head of Alabama’s House Ethics Committee, Republican representative Ed Henry joined other lawmakers to share the plans during a press conference today. Audio recordings surfaced last month of a sexually explicit conversation from 2014 between the governor and his top political aide, Rebekah Mason. Both denied having a physical affair and she has since resigned. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are supporting the impeachment proceedings. Today, Bentley released a statement that said in part: “There are no grounds for impeachment, and I will vigorously defend myself and my administration from this political attack.” This is the first time since 1915 that lawmakers have tried to impeach a sitting governor in Alabama. Former first lady Dianne Bentley divorced the governor last fall.
