Bill to Freeze Cabinet Members Salaries
A bill to freeze the salaries of Governor Bentley’s cabinet members for the remainder of his term is in a House committee tomorrow. House Bill 527 says that when a new governor takes office in 2019, department heads and assistant department heads, as well as executive assistants in the governor’s office, would be deemed classified employees with set salary increases. It also says that a member of the governor’s cabinet can’t serve in an "acting" capacity for more than 90 days. Most of Bentley’s 22-member cabinet received raises this year. For four members, the increase was more than $73,000 a year. A separate Senate Bill, 394, repeals the raises.
