Popular Children’s Author Visits Elementary School
A group of fifth grade students from Kitty Stone Elementary in Jacksonville create a GO-FUND-ME campaign to raise money to meet their favorite book author. And, today it payed off! The students raised $2-thousand dollars to bring author Mary Downing Hahn, to their school. Fifth Grade Reading teacher Karen Guyton says she was inspired because she noticed the students reading many of Hahn’s books and she later made a connection with Hahn on Facebook. She says they rolled around a lot of ideas and finally got Hahn here. Guyton says the campaign was all about the student’s ideas. She says they planned Hahn’s schedule, picked the hotel she would stay in, and picked the restaurant where she would eat dinner. Student Hailey Lozano says she wants to be an author one day… Just like Hahn. Hahn is a former children's librarian and has been writing children's books for over thirty years. Her books have sold more than 2 million copies and consistently win state children's choice awards. She says her exchange with the Kitty Stone Elementary fifth graders has been wonderful. Guyton says the students have started to write poetry and storybooks on their own and, their reading skills have improved. She adds that they even visit the library more.
