The OVC Softball tournament is back in Oxford. League officials announced Wednesday that Choccolocco Park will be the host for the tournament set for next week. The Oxford City Council recalled the bathroom ordinance that was at the heart of the move of the tournament from Oxford to on campus sites. It stemmed from an NCAA ruling last week that cities that hold championship events must have LGBT-inclusive laws in place. OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche released the following statement:
"On Monday the OVC Board of Presidents participated in a conference call where they approved a measure to move the 2016 OVC Softball Championship from Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama to the site of the No. 1 seed due to the discriminatory intent of the ordinance passed by the city requiring individuals to use bathroom facilities that match the biological sex listed on their birth certificate.
The OVC Board of Presidents wanted to ensure that no one associated with the championship would be subject to any type of discrimination. Now that the ordinance has been recalled, we go forward with the plans to have our Championship at Choccolocco Park.
The Oxford Parks and Recreation Department has obviously put a lot of preparation into hosting the championship and appears to value the hosting opportunity. With this level of preparation and commitment we look forward to providing a great championship for our student-athletes."
The tournament begins Wednesday, May 11.
