Thursday, May 5, 2016

A local city council votes to recall a controversial ordinance concerning public restrooms. The Oxford City Council passed the original ordinance last week that would restricted public bathroom use according to the sex on a person’s birth certificate. The law imposed a $500 fine or six months jail time for anyone convicted of violating the ordinance. City Council President Steven Waits says today, that despite the recall vote, absolutely nothing has changed. Council member Charlotte Hubbard says that because of the controversy over the ordinance, she is going to contact the local legislative  delegation and begin working to pass an effective and punitive anti-predator law. Council President Steven Waits and member Chris Spurlin voted not to recall the ordinance. Council members Mike Henderson, Charlotte Hubbard, and Phil Gardner voted for the recall.
