According to a new study conducted by Alabama Possible which highlights statewide poverty rates and data related to educational attainment, employment and food security, more than 900,000 people, live below the federal poverty line. Here’s what their latest data shows: Alabama is the fourth poorest state, 19 of Alabama’s 67 counties have a poverty rate higher than 25-percent, Alabama has the fourth highest rate of child poverty in the country, and Alabama has the fifth lowest Opportunity Index score in the country. Alabama Possible says poverty and hunger are commonplace experiences in Alabama and that nearly all of us has experienced poverty or know someone who has. They have a 2016 Data Sheet at alabamapossible.org.
