An organization known for mentoring local youth receives a $35,000 grant. The Alabama Department of Child Abuse Neglect and Prevention, better known as The Children's Trust Fund, awarded the grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Alabama. Executive Director Valerie Shannon says the resources will fund evidence-based community programs committed to the prevention of child maltreatment and will help the agency continue to advocate for children and the strengthening of families. Shannon says they are excited about being able to serve more children and looking forward to how it will help capacity and expand services. The agency also received a grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama. It was offered only to Standards for Excellence agencies. The foundation awarded Big Brothers Big Sisters $5,000 which will be used for their annual audit. Wells Fargo also gave the agency $4,000 for a program activity the Bigs and Littles will participate in this month. Big Brothers Big Sisters will give backpacks filled with school supplies to their Littles during their program activity. Calhoun County Regions Bank provided the supplies. Also, coming up in September there will be a golf tournament fundraiser at Twin Bridges.
