One local sheriff speaks highly of a program that provides a way for inmates to pay back child support and fines and break the cycle of repeat arrests for non-payment. Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver says the Cherokee County work release program has been in existence since 2009. Shaver adds that the inmate work detail is responsible for many of the small projects inside the detention center. He says inmates also do major work within the county. The program, created by a local act of the Alabama Legislature, allows inmates to be employed by outside businesses.
