Etowah County has an interim coroner in place following the resignation of former coroner Michael Head. Probate Judge Bobby Junkins appointed Joe Horton to the position until Governor Robert Bentley names a permanent replacement. Head resigned the position Wednesday and pleaded guilty to second-degree theft. Deputies arrested him last week for stealing prescription medications from a death scene. As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed Head's drug charge. He'll serve three years on probation. The Etowah County Republican Executive Committee will meet next week to accept applications for the coroner position. The meeting is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. It will take place in room 210 at the Joe Ford Center in Gadsden. Anyone interested in the position will get an opportunity to speak before the committee. After hearing from the applicants, the committee will make a recommendation to Governor Bentley, who will name someone to fill the remainder of Michael Head's term as coroner.
