A Jacksonville State University trustee and long-time public servant has passed away. Jim Bennett died Wednesday night at the age of 76. Bennett served for 14 years as chairman of Jacksonville State University’s board of trustees. He was also a four-time Alabama Secretary of State. He was first appointed Secretary of State in 1993 to fill the vacancy left by Billy Joe Camp before being elected in 1994 to the first of two terms. His re-election in 1998 marked the first time for a Republican to hold the office since Reconstruction. Bennett served his fourth stint as Secretary of State following the resignation of Beth Chapman in 2013. Bennett had been battling liver cancer.
