Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Fire Station

The city of Oxford hosts a groundbreaking ceremony for a fire station that gives the Oxford Fire Department a better presence. The new fire station will be on the corner of Friendship Road and Lane Road. Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks says the fire station will be manned 24 hours a day and will increase the department’s response time. The new station will house three full-time firefighters and the volunteer firefighters from the current Friendship Road station. Nine new firefighters will be hired next Spring. Officials say, the more than 8,000-square-foot station will eventually look very similar to the Bynum station on Highway 78. The new station will also include an office for the Oxford Police Department. The contract to build the station went to Hearst Construction. The cost for the station comes in at just under 1.6 million dollars.
