Gadsden Man Arrested for Ambushing Officer

A Glencoe man is behind bars for what investigators are calling the ambush of a Gadsden police officer. Joseph George is in the Etowah County Detention Center, charged with assault and receiving stolen property. Police arrested him Monday morning at the Jim Martin Wildlife Park off Rainbow Drive. The officers were responding to a call about a suspicious person at the park when they found George attacking a fellow officer. Investigators say when the first officer arrived at the park, George struck him from behind with a blunt object and tried to take the officer's gun. The injured police officer was treated at a local hospital and then released, but is still recovering. Investigators also linked George to a stolen vehicle from Cherokee County that they found in a nearby parking lot.
