A state correctional officer is in critical condition after being stabbed during an assault by an inmate at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. The Alabama Department of Corrections officials says the stabbing took place in the facility’s dining hall during the noon meal. Prison officials report the inmate assaulted and stabbed the officer in retaliation for being denied an extra trey of food. The officer was airlifted to an off-site hospital. Prison officials identified Cleveland Cunningham as a suspect in the stabbing. Cunningham is serving a 20-year sentence on a 2013 first-degree robbery conviction in Baldwin County.
