A teenage driver hits a camel with his car as it crosses the road on Monday night. The accident took place on a road in Sardis City in Etowah County. Interim Sardis City Clerk Janice Holloway says, the camel was euthanized this morning as a result of his injuries. She adds that the driver said he was unable to see the camel because of the bright lights of a truck and that the driver may have been looking away in the moment before the collision, possibly at his phone. The camel owner, Terry Turk, was leading the animal across the road with a halter at the time of the accident, which occurred on a stretch of road that is not well-lighted. The driver was treated at a local hospital for injuries. Holloway says the camel was being housed at Turk's Bama Bucks, a deer breeding facility and wildlife refuge.
